Flea & Tick Care: Why Its Important

Are you feeling lucky? Luck won’t protect your pet from these annoying little bugs called fleas and ticks. It’s normal to encounter these pests from time to time but what we do as a preventative routine can make a big difference on whether these unwanted guests stay or go.  Fleas and ticks can cause skin irritation, skin infections, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and human health risks too.

Luckily, there are ways to protect your pet with both spot-on monthly   treatments, sprays, shampoos and collars.  Be sure to read labels carefully when choosing your method of protection, not all are equal, and dosage is important depending on the size of your pet.  Remember to look for dog specific and cat specific products. Most are not ok for both, so make sure to read and understand for your type of pet and size what is best.  Next you will want to establish a routine, if you decide on a monthly preventative then mark your digital calendar and set your reminders to keep up with it.

Do regular checks on your pet’s fur and skin, especially during peak season and keep up with regular brushing and grooming. A clean pet is not as attractive as a dirty pet so taking these extra steps can help overall. If you like hiking or walking along bike trails with high grass, keep some flea and tick spray on your car. I like to do a quick spray before these types of walks as an added layer of protection with my monthly spot on. Then do a quick scan of their fur by running your fingers through the fur and along their body for any tick hitch hikers before you jump back in your car.

Don’t forget the inside of your home! There are great natural flea and tick sprays that can be applied on your pet’s bed and around the home as needed. As you get into the flea and tick protection routine it becomes a habit and hopefully you won’t have to deal with any long-term health issues with these pests!
