Food allergies occur in dogs and cats when their immune systems accidentally identify a particular food ingredient as harmful which creates antibodies to fight off the dangerous invader (the food). The most common food allergies are beef, dairy, chicken, corn, soy, wheat and yeast.
This is a digestive problem, not an immune response like an allergy. This occurs when dogs and cats are unable to digest a particular ingredient. This often happens when dogs are transitioned from food too quickly, given chews they aren’t used to, or eating things they normally wouldn’t (garbage, people food they aren’t used to etc.).
