The Importance of Pet Nutrition

The Importance of Pet Nutrition

When understanding the poor standards and regulations that are acceptable in the pet food industry, one really gains understanding on the importance of education.

FEED THEM BETTER

In regards to ingredients, we always look for easy to read, real meat protein, low carbohydrates, whole food ingredients and a list of wholesome vitamins and minerals. High amounts of grains, corn, wheat and soy are commonly used as a filler to make the most profit, sadly, at the cost of our pet’s health.

IF YOU TURN OVER YOUR PET’S FOOD BAG AND SEE THIS:

Ingredients: Poultry by-product meal, ground yellow corn, wheat, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, brewers rice…

You have reason to be concerned. Some may look at this and think that poultry is the main ingredient. This form of labeling is called “splitting.” If corn is listed in only one form, then it may be the most abundant ingredient and would have been the listed first. However, by splitting the corn up into two categories: ground yellow corn and corn gluten, they can put poultry as the first ingredient. At first glance, this makes us believe that real protein is the most abundant ingredient, when in reality, this food is basically a bag of corn and by-products.

IF YOU TURN OVER YOUR PET’S FOOD BAG AND SEE THIS:

Ingredients: Fresh Deboned Wild Boar, Fresh Deboned Lamb, Lamb Meal, Russet Potato, Fresh Deboned Pork, Peas…

You have reason to believe that you are nourishing your pet in the best way possible. The difference between real protein and protein by-product is that real protein contains essential amino acids that are the building blocks of the muscles and organs. Keeping our pets healthy from the inside will keep them thriving. It’s simply not an option to blindly trust any pet food company. There are so many fancy marketing teams out there crafting the perfect ad or packaging and putting little money into the actual quality of their product. At Bentley’s, we pride ourselves on doing the work for our customers and creating an environment where you can trust the integrity of every product we carry.

Although there are many brands of pet foods out there, we choose to carry only the best for our customers. We know and believe that dogs and cats do not need a high carb/grain-filled diet. We will not carry any food products that are made with CORN, WHEAT or SOY. Why? Aside from the fact that corn, wheat and soy are fillers, they are also the 3 most common food allergens for dogs and cats. We also do not carry any food or treats that are made in China. There have been too many recalls and too many pets getting ill from those recalls. Another requirement we carry foods and treats free of by-products and chemical preservatives.

TYPES OF FOOD OPTIONS OTHER THAN KIBBLE FOR YOUR PET:

RAW PET FOOD

Ancestral diet consists of real raw, uncooked food. Cooking reduces the potency of almost all nutrients and completely destroys some nutrients. A raw food diet is the most nutrient-dense and easily digestible type of pet food. Many may be concerned with the bacteria (which our pets can handle unlike us humans), however most raw food brands pressure pasteurize their products so there are no concerns. This is a highly sophisticated technique that kills most bacteria and viruses without using heat, therefore maintaining the integrity of all the enzymes and nutrients.

FREEZE-DRIED & DEHYDRATED PET FOOD

Freeze-dried is another way of feeding raw without mess, time commitment or moisture. The product is first frozen and then put into a freeze-dryer where powerful pumps create a vacuum with an extremely cold temperature. Low levels of heat are then applied, enabling the ice within the meat to sublime directly into water vapor, skipping the liquid stage. This changes the food from raw to freeze dried without high heat levels, therefore retaining a high level of the nutritional value of the raw food. You can rehydrate freeze-dried foods with warm water, or serve as-is.

Dehydrating foods creates a very similar outcome as freeze-drying them. The slow use of low heat draws out any moisture while still preserving a high amount of nutrients that the raw food offers. You can rehydrate dehydrated foods with warm water, or serve as-is.
